And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2
It’s amazing to ponder the process of a little worm-like creature that becomes a colorful and beautiful butterfly. When a caterpillar changes into a butterfly it undergoes a process called metamorphosis, which means change. Interestingly, the Greek word for transformed is metamorphoō and it is from there that we get the English word metamorphosis.
In the Bible, there was an event that occurred with Jesus and His disciples; Peter, James and John. (Matthew chapter 17, Mark chapter 9 and Luke chapter 9) known as “The Transfiguration.” When this happened, Jesus’ face was shining like the sun and His clothes were shining like light. The glory of Jesus manifested on the outside of His body when that happened. In the same way, when we live our lives, what is on the inside comes out on the outside and is visible to others. As believers in Jesus, we are filled with His Holy Spirit, and are changed on the outside and conform to the new natures inside of us!
Becoming more loving like Jesus is something that only God can do. We can’t make it happen but we can choose what we put into our minds to create fertile soil for God to do His work to grow and change us to be more like Him. When we renew our minds in the living Word of God, the Bible, we will be thinking His thoughts. We have changed our minds to think with Him by reading His Word and by asking Him to help us to do what it says. We won’t be perfect in how we live, but over time, we will be transformed by Him into something dazzling!
The Bible says in 2nd Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. The glory of God is visible in the face of every true believer because they have the Holy Spirit living in them. Christians who manifest the fruit of the Spirit shine with visible love, peace and joy. It’s noticeable and it means that the individual is becoming more like Jesus Christ.
Moses’ face was shining with the glory of God when he walked down Mt. Sinai and that is what goes on with us as believers. We reflect God’s glory. This is also visible in the attitudes and words that are coming out of us. When we spend time praying and in His Word, His Spirit transforms our hearts. When we set our minds on heavenly things and on things that have eternal value, we will have a mind that pleases God and He helps us to live right before Him. We are then living out a new life that is marked by holiness and purity of mind and heart. This is very different from the old corrupted way of living before knowing God.
In Psalm 119:11, King David said, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” We can not stop here though. An important thing to remember is that God transforms us as we cultivate a love relationship with Him. An active vibrant prayer life, as well as a lifestyle of worship and obedience to Him will please the Lord and cause us to know Him in a deeper way.
When the world observes us, they should be seeing something beautiful and lovely and not sinful and ugly. The ugliness is part of the old nature that does not follow God’s ways. Other people should be seeing love in how we conduct ourselves. Our lives should be so vibrant that it causes the world to react with statements such as, “I want what you have.” or “there’s something different about you.”
It’s contagious! Living a transformed life is living in a new way with a new nature, new heart and new mind. Everything becomes new! When it happens, it is glorious and authentic. This process takes time but is well worth it. It is my prayer that you will believe these truths and be transformed into a beautiful and colorful “butterfly!”
