 Isaiah 62:5 As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, So shall your God rejoice over you (Isaiah 62:5). There is a book in the Bible that gives a beautiful picture of the Bride and the Bridegroom and that is The Song of Solomon, also known as The Song of Songs. This book is a collection of love poems between a lover and his beloved. I believe that this book is "The Song of all Songs" and sings about the beautiful love exchange that Jesus has with His beloved bride, the church. Theologian Matthew Henry (1662-1714) describes it in his commentary as a "seraphic" love which remains and will to the end of time. Seraphic means blissful, rapturous, ecstatic and joyful. That sounds like two lovers that are in love with one another. The Bride and Bridegroom long to spend time with one another and are filled with joy when they are together. Our awesome Creator loves us and desires a relationship with us. It pleases Him when we take the time to sit with Him to love and worship Him with all of our heart. When we do, He inflames us with His holy love. He wants our attention, affection and most of all, our love and devotion. If we love Him, we will obey Him (John 14:15, 1st John 5:3). Psalm 147:11 says, The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love. Above all other loves is this Holy relationship that God wants to have with us. He rejoices over us and enjoys our company! He loves when we converse with Him and share our deepest thoughts and concerns. He loves to speak to us in His Word to reveal eternal truths including His many amazing attributes. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Psalm 34:8). In Matthew Henry's commentary on the Song of Solomon, it says, "Holy love is a fire that begets a vehement heat in the soul and consumes the dross and chaff that are in it, melts it down like wax into a new form, and carries it upwards as the sparks toward God and heaven." As we are being refined by God's Holy fire, we become more like Jesus and less like our own selfish natures. In Ephesians 5:27 it says, "That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish." This is speaking about Christ and His Bride, the church. In the book of Revelation, the description of Holy preparation continues in Chapter 19, verse 7. It says, "Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” His love is a mighty, passionate and powerful flame. It may seem strange to think of God loving us with such passion. Song of Songs 2:16 says "My beloved is mine and I am His." When Jesus is our "first love" we desire to do what pleases Him. We do this because we love Him, not because we are seeking to be loved by Him more. We actively seek the reward of knowing Him. As we get to know Him better, we naturally want to do what He wants. That includes being a bright light in this dark world and learning how to love others with the unconditional love that He has for us. God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). There is no greater love than this! The Bible says in John Chapter 15, verse 13, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends." Jesus, the perfect Son of God died on the cross for us so that we could be forgiven and have a relationship with God forever. When we place our faith and trust in Jesus and what He did for us, we become His.
